As P came back to her family free from her husband travelling all alone through the dangerous border areas of China it was not just her family rejoiced. Ben was there along with her mother who finally saw her daughter again. A daughter she had probably given up the hope to see. Others like me were also there updated through regular posts from Ben. While the drama of her escape and getting out of contact was running high, all of us were waiting to know what would be fate of this girl; who was kidnapped and sold across the border married to a Chinese man.

A fate most of us in the civilized world would rarely imagine for anyone around, though we know bad things happen. Such things happening at a scale where every few days someone looses a daughter or son to dark hands of human trafficking is not something easily imaginable. Beauty of the mountains starts scaring you when you loose your loved ones to their shadows, as they are smuggled across the passes and the same mountains become an insurmountable barrier.

Many of us try to travel with least possible environmental impact and we love to immerse ourselves in culture but this is a place where we should be causing an impact.

Those who would shun prostitution do not mind referring to a thriving sex industry,  so much so that in India, Thailand is not a budget backpacking destination it is a place to get a quick release in numerous parlors around the country. To believe that the government and authorities are completely uninformed of all this would be a big lie, they know it exists maybe they take steps to stop it but till there will be a demand someone will try to feed the supply chain. A sex tourism heaven within a culture that still thinks sex as taboo should be an alarm bell but none of it matters as good time weighs above everything else.

Matt did and article on Thailand's sex tourism, was interesting but the comments were what engaged me enough to spend almost 30-40 minutes on the page. Even though everyone agrees that they do not support trafficking and forced prostitution, they all agree they are nobody to judge and neither am I. My social moral rests on a very simple question-
Would I want it for my family?
No, none of it.  The I wonder is  many people who are in the trade, (from the children being trafficked to the people who traffic them or run the camps) started out simply with a desire to support their family.
When I twist the question to -
Will I do it if my children were starving?
The balance swings towards Yes and I do not have children yet let alone starving.
It is not just sex trade or forced marriage that is the final destination of all those trafficked many end in labor camps working unimaginable hours to produce or create something we might have used sometime in our lives.

What appalls me are the people who see no wrong in putting others into situations which strip them of their basic human rights and in many cases will lead to their untimely death. Is it just the mentality of 'Better them than me'; or do some of us don't see human life and dignity as something to be respected.

Anyways I do have a few questions for those who have availed paid sex services.

Do you know for sure that your partner was not forced or trafficked to share your bed?
Would you have walked out if you came to know they were forced or trafficked?

Life and your perception of crime can take a completely different hue when you are one of the people affected by any crime in the world from something as simple as a pick-pocketing. This is probably what happened when Ben found out that one of the girls in the paradise he had come across in his travels was trafficked, and then to know there were not just one but two he knew and more he could only hope to support and help with his documentary SisterForSale.

If you want to contribute to the project head over to their site or follow them here on twitter.

When we stick to a brand or a product without giving others a chance it is us clinging to our way of life and the need to walk in a comfort bubble.
Travelers swear by the airlines they fly and the bags they own. All that is good but there is a flip side to brand loyalty. If you have ever spent extra money to get something you already know because all the other options are foreign, you have already experienced the expensive side of brand loyalty. From the pizza and burger you have been craving instead of the rice plate to the expensive brand of shampoo you have packed in multitudes just to make sure you pamper your hair well. Hey ladies I know what I am saying is second nature to all of us, but tell me how long is the supply going to last if you are on a RTW trip and visiting all the humid South Asian cities. I have carried a lot of toiletries for my two day trip and I have spent three to four time for my lunch simply because the restaurant seemed up class or because I knew the brand.

Giving up brand loyalty is not just for those who are travelling a lot or travelling without their jobs it is actually far far more important for those who are traveling with their jobs simply because it saves you money. When you travel with your job you have people who depend on you, obligations you have to fulfill, you are still not a nomad who can wipe her hands and mind free and think only about herself. you need money not just to sustain travel but to maintain roof over your head when you along with paying for those hotels as you travel. Commute is a daily thing and so are utilities and social commitments. Saving up and making it a habit will surely keep you travelling happy and working happy.

When we travel for business it is usually for a week or two at max and many of us come back without knowing what that place offered. Stuffed with hotel breakfast and office lunches it is very rare to have business traveler sit down in a local shop or trade their shampoo for something local. We rarely take chances and I believe that takes a lot away from travel just the way it did for me when we went for our honeymoon.

Ever paid more to get your brand of Beer?
Before we go in depth on all the issues that brand loyalty can create for a traveler who is either traveling or saving up for her travel it is important that you realize some major things up front.

Currency changes the ball game:

Are you earning in Dollars and planning to spend it in Ringgit or Rupee? If so than you will have a lot less to worry compared to people earning in those currencies simply because your money runs way longer than theirs. But do remember if your favourite brands are present in the country you are going to there are high chances that the same stuff is going to cost you less when you land in the foreign land. 2$ go a long way in SriLanka.
Bottom Line: earn in an expensive currency and spend in a cheaper one or else learn to survive on less and forget those 50$ bottles of whisky.

Somethings cannot be replaced

Most of these things are medically related, but after the recently comparing cost of insulin injections in India and US I am inclined to say you will be better off visiting a high end hospital in a developing country and still save a ton. Tim Ferris had a lot to say about this in his book-----. Now when things are not medically related there are always things that you simply can't compromise on. Maybe you HAVE to use tampons but they are not available in most parts of the world so you stock up. Maybe there is only this specific shampoo which is saving the last hairs on your scalp so you stock it up and leave behind something else.
Bottom line: if there is really something that you cannot live without (or you will come to some harm) it is no problem being brand loyal or stocking them up.

The world is getting smaller

No seriously this is the truth, most often than not you can find the exact same thing in a remote country though you will pay more. There are cases when I have heard people exclaiming that they got their home brands cheaper in India than wherever they are from. If you look carefully there will be a Made in India/China/Vietnam or something similar on most things. So in case you are planning to pack everything stop and do some research that thing might already be available in the country you are heading to. If what you want satisfies both above requirements and is not available stock up otherwise you will find a way.
Bottom Line: You might get your brand where you are going, maybe even cheaper or better and you don't even have to compromise.

Sure you don't want to try something- Different?
There are reasons why choosing a local brand will help your travels and experiences even if the regular you is a bit uncomfortable.

They are usually cheaper

We all know and agree you need money to travel and you need to spend smart if you want to travel more. If you have a million at your disposal please feel free to laugh at us mortals. When you choose a much cheaper product compared to your usual you are cutting down from your established expenses. Not only will this now become a recurring saving you will more often than not start applying it to more and more consumables. Trade off between local chocolates and the dark chocolate you are used to at home can be worth a lot as soon as you start comparing prices. In India most chocolates start from 10 INR but imported dark chocolate will rarely start below 40-50 and that is actually the entry level pricing.

You are experiencing more

Living like a local, experiencing things their way is what most of us dream of when we travel. What better way to experience local culture than to accept and enjoy local produce and products. Lettuce tastes good but have you tried some ripe mangoes or a dragon fruit. You might not be able to put it in a sandwich but really you want a sandwich when you can eat from a Mamak shop and savor piping hot nasi goreng? While in Malaysia for a month I realized potatoes were very expensive and lemon was too much pricing at 99sen per piece. In India that would be a rarity though now produce has gone higher here too. That meant no homemade lemon water and no potato but I filled up my cart on pineapples and watermelons and some very different mee than I was used to.

You are supporting a local business

Well local or not all businesses have dubious policies but supporting a local company makes much more sense than filling up coffers of a multi-national. Eating local, buying local helps the economy and money goes directly in the hands of the people you came to visit. If you have an option drink from a small tea shop and skip the expensive cafe. When you stock up you are supporting your own local business but stocking up usually results in heavier baggage and rarely lasts the whole trip.

Your baggage is lighter

When you stock up or carry what ever is important to you, baggage becomes heavy from the get go. I love shoes and made the mistake of carrying 4-5 pairs for many trips and had over 10 as we left for our honey moon. I wore 2 pairs at max and now travel with just two or add up another if it is required for a specific task. Not only were we marginally spared form paying for extra baggage, that weight was a nuisance. Another issue you risk facing is bursting liquids. Hopefully nothing will actually burst but there are high chances of leakage and when you have multiple bottles the chances multiply.

You save up

Though this follows from the first reason of avoiding brand loyalty when you are traveling it is always better to reiterate because not only will you save money while you are traveling you can keep on saving money when you come back or start when you are building your kitty. Remember most of us cannot recognize varieties of rice but a slightly cheaper but comparable variety will probably do the same thing for you once it is a part of your meal.

If you are traveling with your job and will probably not take a round the world trip until later in life do remember all of this applies to you too. Whether you are an Expat or you are a student or you have a regular salary funding your family coffers staying away from brand loyalty both while travelling and at home can be a savior and breathe fresh air into declining bank balance. We came across Jeera Soda in Hyderabad and loved it. Stuck to coke and other well known aerated drinks I had never looked at the local variety in them until recently and some of those will surprise you.

Not just that when you restrict yourself to a certain brand or product you are letting go of all the experiences and tastes you might get with the other brand or product. We buy a certain kind of oil for daily cooking, if you have been in India you would know that these vary according to regions and you will find people cooking in Ghee to people cooking in olive oil. Though any refined oil works for most of the population now my travels have introduced me to mustard and coconut which I now love because of the flavors they impart. These same ones were at some point discarded because of their distinctive taste.
Delicious Dosas on the Highway near Kadpakkam

If you think that the chains or big name restaurants are the place to eat, I do not disagree with you completely. Sometimes comfort of something you know and a familiar taste can ease all the discomforts of a hectic trip in a dusty mini bus filled to its brim. I have whenever possible grabbed a burger and coke in other countries and other parts of India just to see if it tastes different. I now know that mayo is way sweeter in Srilanka than anywhere else, and so is the coke apart from being VERY expensive. Seriously I had a veggie KFC burger there. Just like I know No Subway really puts right amount of veggies in Malaysia, no clue why but that's how it works and I could go on and on.
But when you stick exclusively to the top brass of the restaurants not only are you doing a disservice to your pocket but also to the local cuisine. Any part of South India has its own version of Idli which can cost you 20 for 4 pieces in a local shop to 100 for 2 pieces in a well established name and way above that in a five star hotel. The choice is always yours but I am yet to find a big place which does idli sambhar better than the local shops.

There are many things in which brand loyalty can pay you in the long run. Airlines and Hotel miles are one such example but you have to be prepared to spend for the first few nights before you get a free night stay or fly a while before you get some free flights.

I have observed that when we stick to a brand or a product without giving others a chance it is us of clinging to our way of life and the need to walk in a comfort bubble. Though I would probably never tough a live octopus let alone eat it I will travel to japan and may be eat something else which is local and vegetarian, there always is something.

If you have ever felt restricted because of your comfort needs or because you seek a certain product or brand let us know also if you have had any positive or negative experiences with local produce or product put it in comments. All those who tasted Durian or Durian candy I feel you unless you liked it (HOW?).

Travel has been keeping me busy along with all the other projects I have taken up. I have had almost no creative juice left after writing huge amounts of content for my other blog and rewriting the Work Travel Live book.Well I have just started rewriting the book. I am taking a break for 10 days and going travelling. I know I should probably take you along and post updates but nah! that's a bit too much for where I am at these days. We are not sure if we are taking the laptop even.

So in purely shameless fashion I am leaving you with these images from awesome people over at Unsplash and a great blog to read while I saunter around the white sandy beaches of Andamans.

The blog is The Art of Non Conformity. In case you have not read it head over and read this awesome blog. Ans all my dreamer followers go ahead and have a look at Mixergy. Even if you do not dream of becoming an entrepreneur it will light a fire.

We are back on 7th October so see you around.

Did I tell you about the Andaman trip in September end. This year has been AWESOME with all the trips we have been able to do and enjoy. We set up a budget target for our travels when the year started and we have exceeded it maybe spent almost double already. Anyways we are going to another beach and this time unlike Diu I am hoping to get some swimming and snorkeling done. SCUBA is right now looking very out of our pockets and so is the surfing trip I had wanted to go on later in the year.

Right now I am breaking my head about what to take along and what to omit. One of my bigger concerns is my weight and getting a swim suit. I am looking at few and I am honestly unable to decide which ones to buy.

Apart from the clothes it is my desire to carry a small barbecue to the island, not just to have great food but also to save ourselves some money. The trip looks like it is going to be another expensive one and I am not really sure where I am going to dish out the money from. so I am working hard on my freelancing.

The reason why the trip is threatening to empty our pockets is because of the obnoxiously expensive accommodation (affiliate). The only reasonable accommodation I am able to find comes with scuba diving and that will decimate my resources. I feel like I should go and start my own home stay in Havelock and have a huge hall where people can bring in their sleeping gear and rest for the night. Let me know what you think about that. Anyways a sleeping bag is definitely not one of my desired items to pack. It is just too bulky and with the standing seats on the ferries which we will probably take it doesn't sound practical either.

Our itinerary for the ten day trip includes Havelock, Diglipur and Little Andaman. As of now I don't think we will be in Port Blair for long though cellular Jail is definitely one of the things I am interested in.

If you have been to Andamans and have a few tips to share or if you can direct us to a place you think will suit us. Our criteria clean and CHEAP like the guest house in Diu.

Are you thinking what does the headline mean? It is exactly what has been going on in my head past few months that is some random thoughts and a lot of plans. First of let me digress form travel for a bit.
If you have been to a dentist and sat in that chair of horrors you would understand what I am about to rant off. We visited dentist in December yup I rarely if ever need to see dentist and my oral hygiene and teeth are in perfect condition or should I say were. I remember mentioning this in this post. So after the lady gave me a cleaning/scaling which according to her I did not need I now have sensitive teeth. After six+ months of using soft bristles and brushing less than previously I am stuck with sensitive teeth and now I have to make sure I floss and use a mouth wash every day.

Now that you know what has me riled up let us move to another thing that is eating me except for the fact that I have barely updated my blog. We have not had a real trip in over a month Last time we were traveling was in late April when we went diving and since then Nada. Well we did visit my family but I don't really count that as a trip though it was real fun. I can feel I am getting antsy and as a result of a lot of work and irritation over not traveling for a long stretch of time I have finally concluded that Travel is addictive and i might be an addict.

I like to believe that I have *inspired* people to travel more even if they have jobs and specifically if they have a job. In India we are told that school and college are meant for studying and your life awaits you after that. There are very few who actually travel and if there are a few of them who do they are rarely females of our species. So the time you have money (more than what you had in college at least) you are being told you have to work your butt off to make something out of yourself. STOP and think when are you going to actually enjoy your life. With all due respect to the traveling retirees old knees are rarely going to take you up some mountain.
Where am I going with this? Two points which are related to each other closely.
1. Travel now don't put it for later.
2. Travel can be addictive so keep traveling because withdrawal is a b***
Let me elaborate, what is your age right now? If you are over 25 remember your school college days and honestly tell yourself if you can do as many night outs as you could have done back then? Do you crave your bed every night when you were more than satisfied with a corner on the mattress after a late night party? Exactly my point. On our year end trip we slept in train for almost a week and woke up to bumpy jeep safaris, at 27-28 it was fun but I am not sure if i would be inclined to do the same ten years from now with a child in tow. Bottom line travel now, who says you will be walking the earth when you are old.

As I already said we haven't been traveling and my creative energy has suffered many folds. I just don't feel like writing most days and when I do it feels lie a chore after few lines I have a lot of unfinished posts and am trying to finish them off and them polish them some. Another thought that has been plaguing me is how do I want my travel and blogging career to go?
Anyways what do you have to say about Travel and Dentists!

This not only affects travel experiences it also results in many missed opportunities and experiences.
Life has been really busy and entertaining, hence my almost complete absence from the blog. Let me tell you what I have been doing past few weeks. I had been traveling and working both in good portions. Suddenly the freelancing world had turned to me smiling and we had more work than we could manage in spare hours. A lot of hours were spent working with the sole aim of completing a major chunk before we left for Goa. And then we were in Goa, beautiful place with great people and awesome food. Goa this time was as relaxing as ever but we were there for more reasons than taking a break we went to get certified. We are now certified scuba divers and it was better than you can imagine. And no we did not see any sharks we did however see a sting ray and it was beautiful. More about scuba later along with my novice tips.

I wanted to talk about perceptions in travel. Many attractions have fallen prey to perceptions and many cultures have adapted themselves to enact the perceptions to keep their tourists happy. Why does it matter and is it all bad? It matters because it forces people to behave differently than they would in normal circumstances it is unfair to them. It is the same when people are surprised to find cosmopolitan cities in India and fail to understand why the snake charmers are absent. It is not just the way tourist perceive a destination, what locals think about tourists also matters a lot and can be detrimental to both communities.

I faced the same dilemma when we were deciding on our trip t SriLanka. Questions were being raised on human rights in the country and the general perception of the country was not the best in India. We thought about it and realized it is unfair to the people in a war torn country to be denied income. I would feel bad if someone would say that they would never visit India because of shameful acts by a few Indians. Our leaders and society needs improve but seclusion is not going to help any one.

We did come across local reservations while on our trip to SriLanka, many were happy to meet the neighbors but a few were apprehensive and relieved that we did not belong to a certain part of India. This not only affects travel experiences it also results in many missed opportunities and experiences.

What do you think?

I don't know how long I'll live, even if I don't become legend for others I should be able to look up to myself.
My phone was stolen on our very first train ride for GoUNESCO Challenge. I had just finished reading the last book in Shiva Trilogy on it, its battery had died and I dozed off for a few minutes. It had been a particularly cold journey in March which is rare and we struggled to get any sleep. As I woke up from the cold I searched around for my phone on my berth. Couldn't find it anywhere and finally called out to Aj sleeping in the berth below. He looked around and in a few minutes we knew it had happened. Coincidentally train had stopped in some lonely area around the time and it started again by the time we concluded that the phone had been stolen.

Why do I share this story with you? For two reasons

1. First, you should be careful with your belongings especially if you are travelling in sleeper class on trains. There are lot of people traveling who are simply not reliable and the are everywhere. Being absent minded will get you to your destination without your belongings.
2.Second, I did not let this incident stop me from traveling and many more incidents both good and bad happened along the way
.
I put up Thread on Reddit which I did mention on---- which asked people to complete the line
I would travel if only....

One of the replies was- Fear.

I have written about fear on my other blog as well and you can read it here. Basically fear is a crippling crutch which feeds on your insecurities and leaves you paralyzed in situations where it is a must that you deliver. Crying on my hotel room pillow and missing my phone would have helped nobody. Instead we went out as planned and visited beautiful caves of Ellora along with some other delights Aurangabad has to offer. Next day we were off to Ajanta and even though I had lost my phone a day ago I had awesome fun and did appreciate the hard work artists and monks had put into the detailed sculptures and paintings. I wasn't going to let some thug interfere with me experiencing the epitome of Indian painting, and I did not.

No doubt there are situations when we are overwhelmed and can't think straight. I have found out that these situations reduce in number longer you travel or involve yourself in any activity. As you travel more you would have experienced more and learned more. For example when a cab driver quoted a certain price I checked it with another person who would be sharing the cab with me. It resulted in a better price for me and taught me a lesson. The reason I asked was because I had learned to double check prices over the past year.

But that did not save us from being overcharged in SriLanka. We let our guards down when we find helpful people and generalize that all the inhabitants of  a particular place are truthful. SriLankans are welcoming and helpful and as we got down the Rock temple in Dambulla we decided to eat right across the street.
We did not ask price and were charges over 400LKR for a plate of fried rice, it had cost us 150 almost everywhere else. Even if you take lessons and learn to get past problems they will always be there and find a way to creep up to you. It would definitely not have done us any good to fight or stop believing in the locals. Except for this person everyone had been great.

If you are not traveling because you are afraid of all the bad things out there  you are wasting your own time. I don't know how long I'll live, even if I don't become legend for others I should be able to look up to myself.

about us
It is rare that we realize how lucky we are. I do not say this in terms of physical capabilities or severe circumstances. In the most regular of ways simply spending time with your spouse or loved one can make you feel lucky. While looking around Indiblogger for inspiration for another post (they have a really cool indispire thing going on)I found British Airways contest.
Contest is cool prizes are super cool. The contest terms say that you should embed the video below in your posts. Any external media on my blog is something I don't identify with, so naturally I checked this one out. Long story short it ended with my eyes moist. This becomes the first ever video to go up on Longing Travel.
It is wrong to demand from anyone that they do not give special attention to their significant other. If you ask that of someone stop, they are supposed to be special for each other.

We live in a joint Indian family and everyone in the family divides time between four other members who live in the house apart from himself or herself. After all the commitments we make time for ourselves and each other. I guess it comes down to what you put first and what you demand of others. It is wrong to demand from anyone that they do not give special attention to their significant other. If you ask that of someone stop, they are supposed to be special for each other. Thankfully people at home understand that.

Traveling Alone- NO

You'd remember I wrote this post about how I can't travel alone anymore. That has become our reality. Solo travel might be enlightening as many say but I feel when you can be yourself, allow yourself to fail in front of another you will receive enlightenment indeed. There are many things that a solo female traveler learns on the journey, I am sometimes happy I do not have to face many difficulties that these awesome women do simply because AJ is there. I am envious of the freedom they enjoy, but being happily married comes with a different kind of satisfaction.
Every trip we take teaches me a lot about my self and much more about us. Its great how we change that small bit after each trip.
There are many trips that we plan, dream about and many more we still have to discover. Right from trekking through Turkey to backpacking through Europe. We make plans and play our own roles in the travel dynamics. I being the impulsive one get excited about everything. Aj being the calm person he is reasons the idea and we finally decide on what we will do.

Month of separation

The contest reminded me of the time when Ajay had to travel to Malaysia two weeks for work.  Those weeks were long and then it dropped on us he had to be there for additional two. Same happened when I had to visit Malaysia for work. Each one of these times we wanted to get to the other person and every time we dropped the plan. Flying off meant money and leaves and the other person would have to work nonetheless.

Travel an escape or means to get closer?

With work, side work and other engagements there are times when we do not get time to really talk with each other. Travel is one thing which brings us closer . We get to talk, eat, sing and do whatever else we feel like the entire day- together. In our regular lives we spend our days together but we are working. We usually plan to travel for months at a time but it does not look like a near possibility. The thought excites us both because it is something that we have never done or seen anyone near to us do. It would be cool to just travel and stop when you please. This I guess will be the answer to the contest question. These are my top two long trips, backpacking as always.

Backpacking across India

Travelling in your own country helps a lot. You don't need a visa, currency remains the same and people try to scam you less. There are many more that can be added and when you live in India you have a baffling and new experience every time you go to the market. There's just too much to do, see and live (eat) all around the country that you feel time running short. You can have a look at my dream route below. Details of the trip should be coming soon though I have no dates for the trip itself.

Backpacking across Europe

This is something that almost every one who likes to travel wants to do. Though you can only spend three months in the Schengen zone every six months I think that should be enough to visit two countries at least. What do your experiences suggest? Did I tell you that the prize is two return fares for London I have my fingers crossed as always.

Which one of these do you suggest we take up. And to put the same question to you.
How far would you go to get closer to someone you love?
Tell us in your comments below.

We have laid out our travel calendar for the year and have rough itinerary ready for two major trips we are taking and the one we are not taking.
We started off the year plotting a trip to Maldives all excited to touch two countries in one year we researched the island country and roped in a few friends to join us on the trip.
Timing of our leaves, money and the fact that we do not have scuba certification made us rethink the trip and we scrapped it. Instead we are now going to Goa to get our scuba certification. Over all a win and a certification to explore 70% of the world - under water.

Countries on our radar.

There are two countries that we wanted to visit next- Bhutan and Thailand. both of them are quite attractive and if you are based in southern India the prospects are even more bright. Bhutan due to its tourism policy is a country which might be high on people's wishlist but it is almost never high on there to do list. An Indian passport enables us to travel to the country without the restriction of 200-250$ per day visa. Its more like walking in after getting a permit.

Final Choice

After a bit of research and talking to a Bhutani friend it was the most obvious choice. I had been thinking of sharing our plans as they are more or less final now. Skyscanner came up with this contest and again a great way to get an entry in. Did I tell you about the freebie sunsilk sent in for submitting this entry.

Transport

As always we started with flights. Bhutan has a precariously located airport in the city of Paro. Aj came up with and interesting fact. Only 8 pilots are qualified to land in the airport. That fact alone makes it sound both life threatening and exciting. Druk Air flies from Delhi and Kolkata in India to Paro.

Sharing a border and maintaining good relations(finally!) means a possibility of land crossing. you can enter Bhutan from Puentsholing which is 3 odd hours from Siliguri.

you would remember I talked about Kolkata and its amazing food. Getting to Siliguri from Hyderabad means train to Kolkata and then forward train, bus or flight from there. Call it our bad luck but we could not find a single flight which could facilitate easy transition form Kolkata to Siliguri. Trains again emerged as our transport of choice. We will reach the border crossing after two trains and a taxi from Hasimara with over 40 hours of travel. It might not sound exceptionally smart it actually is. How you ask.

With two flight and required airport transfers we barely save 12 hours that too if a bus would ply from Puentsholing to Thimphu at 3 pm. On the other hand flights mean over 5000 Rs for one way our current transport selection comes to Rs1500. And by taking a train on both sides we should be spending around 3000 per person instead of over 10000. If we were able to get any considerable time in Bhutan it might make sense to spend that much. Keeping costs low enables us to travel more.

Accomodation

We did search agoda and other sites for hostels but what we came to understand was that it is better if we search accommodation when we get there. Our budget is 500 for a double room with hot water. Do let us know if you have any recommendations.
Then it clicked maybe we can couch-surf. after browsing through the couch-surfing page for the country I am hopeful that we will be able to find a host or stay a night with our friend. If you have been to Bhutan and know someone who wouldn't mind hosting two travelers please let us know.

Food

Food is never a major concern as long as I can get something vegetarian to eat. Brief research online was enough to assure me of tasty meals ahead on the trip. Its going to be Bhutani cuisine all the way.

Here's the Google Excel which works great for us while planning our itinerary. Its completely free no strings attached.

Travel With Job

Now for the part which is tough for many. How do you make time for these travel and not run short of your leaves?
We are traveling from end of September to first week of October. By planning ahead and careful planning we get 10 days off for 5 leaves that we will be taking. We have already put in a word with our immediate supervisor.
We could have done the same at last moment too. Let me again outline the benefits of planning -
1. We are prepared. We know our dates and can track and use deals as soon as they are out because we have planned our trip.
2. Our senior knows when we are going and where. Not only that helps him to schedule work well it also allows us to schedule rest of the year better.
3. We know how much and when we are going to need money. Our saving and side income can be better organized.
4. we get to put out couch-surfing requests much earlier and have better chances of getting a host.

Thailand...?

Now the Thailand trip. It was an easy replacement for the Maldives trip. After doing our calculations and looking at the costs of scuba certification we found it to be too expensive for this year. Will we be able to do do it next year. We already have our sights on Chaddar trek and will be saving up for it after we get through the scuba certification.

As always I will let you know if I win anything.

The year changed and I did not put up the new year look ahead. You might think I am a bit behind time. I actually am not. I wanted to know what we plan on doing so that I could share with you. You know how I hat making false promises.

Starting the year with and infection

If you think I talk about the travel bug this year started on a completely different note. I caught an air born infection and have been coughing almost all of January. Take care of those tonsils they can ruin your nights sleep in a really bad way. I had been a zombie and I hate taking leaves when I am sick.
We Are going to Sri Lanka and somewhere else next year
I know I know people keep on travelling full time and visiting countries every few weeks we don't get to do that and I love getting a passport stamp. I have been talking about it for some time. Let me tell you something I am right now in Chennai for our late night flight to Colombo.

The Travel Formula

We have devised sort of a formula. We plan on visiting an international destination and take a lot of trips around our own country. You know our cheap nature and in line with that we have fixed a blanket budget for our trips. If we exceed it in three trips so be it. You will listen to me sulking and sharing the Stories form the road if we don't travel for more than a few months.

The local food drive.

Last year was all about traveling to UNESCO World heritage sites this year is all about the city we live in- Hyderabad. I realized that we have been really unfair to the city which has exposed us to a lot of cuisines and has a lot of beautiful sites to visit. This year is all about awesome Hyderabadi stuff and the near and dear ones. We have been eating our way through the city these past few days and plan on making the site as quick reference for eating in the city.

Work Travel Live is coming out this year

I am working on the book and this Year it Will come out. I am looking for a few of you to help me make it the best resource ever. If you are interested in being a part of the books journey send me a message and I'll send you the first draft to give your opinion on.

The Travel Toolkit

Yup there is another thing in the pipelines. I am developing a toolkit for all of you who ask me how do we manage to travel with our jobs. It will give you the tools to plan and live your trips and claim your life back form the cubicle jungle.

The Home restaurant

I have been dabbling with the idea and plan on doing a few trial runs. If you are interested in sampling some of my home cooked goodness and are going to be in Hyderabad send me a shout out so that I can treat you to some of my cooking.
So while you work we'll takeoff to the tropical paradise of SriLanka. See you soon.

At the rate indiblogger is going I will not have to think for what to write next. After the hair and travel it is another topic. We had been discussing it lately too. Both me and Aj want to go back to school for our masters at some point of time. And that point of time has to be before we have to cater to a little one. (No family member gets to comment of this post.) A few days ago we were building castles of going to Singapore and I was dreaming of visiting south east Asian countries. It is high time that we visit Bali or Thailand.
then this contest came up in Indiblogger. As British council says knowledge is great, my thought about Cambridge and AA came back to life. I know that it is too expensive for us to study in UK and equally if not more difficult for the other person to get a job. So I had nipped the thought in the bud. No strolling along the Thames or visiting the Scottish neighbors or maybe taking a break to Paris. Maybe it will happen when I have money to travel which doesn't feel anytime soon.
So they ask me what I want to study and where. I actually want to get a Masters degree in Transportation Planning. Sounds bore? That's what I do for a living and I actually like it. I still remember the first time I went for  a site visit. I felt I was changing the way a city moves and will move in future. I was changing the way we as travelers will perceive the city. I could make it easy to navigate or my oversight can result in nooks and crannies which might cause problems. (I am not THAT high up to cause big problems but yeah I will be some day.)
I have had an eye on this course at The Bartlett for years. The college in itself is a big part of my dreams.

Many do have the opportunities of spending a semester abroad and many catch the travel bug as they learn a new culture. None of us had the opportunity and poor me was studying in my home town. Studying abroad seems to be the right thing to do.

When we were discussing about going back to school my mind was going through these cycles of planning trips from wherever we would discuss. I have always felt that when you study abroad you are living a nomadic life. Most don't think that way, for me it is change. It is the change we crave as travelers and what we want to achieve. A change of landscape for a few years. Usually not too long to bore you with its opportunities but long enough that you itch for another change after that. Is it just me or is this the way the travel bug makes you?

Apart from school, job is another way of seeing the world. Being an expat doesn't just come with a hefty paycheck it comes with a paid opportunity to explore what you would have had to pay for. A long term stay at a place you would probably spend a week with working in your own city. There are many who would hop on a plane taking them to a different culture and pays them well.
What thirsty souls we travelers are.

So dear travelers how do you feel about going back to school? What do you want to study? To the long term travelers would you feel bound by the school? Do you think studying at a university abroad is like traveling that country?

Will keep you posted about the contest but I don't really have much hopes.

As you would know we are traveling to SriLanka in early Feb for a week or so. I did write about my dilemma about the visit when there was a lot of cry over human rights issue. Though the replies I got on various media reinstated my belief that not visiting is not an option.
So now I am deep into the research part of my trip planning. It has taught me a lot and I am still learning. I decided to put these things down in a post.

1. We are cheap people.

The real reason we booked our tickets to Colombo is because GoIbibo was giving a flat 3000/- off on any return international flight. For Sri Lanka that's almost 40% of airfare. Further details of Hacking the trip in some later posts.

2. We are not visiting majority of Heritage sites

Sri Lanka is known for heritage cities and when I started planning they were high on my list. Today we are planning to visit only 3 of the 8 world heritage sites of Sri Lanka.    Reason for this is the extraordinary high entree fee for all these sites. The total per person comes out to be more than what we have paid of our return flights combined.

3.Online may or may not be the best way

We always book way in advance and rarely leave any thing to chance. Usually it turns out great and the only time we did not book a place we had nowhere to stay and came back home the same night. Internet has been our trusted aide but this time when I am looking for far cheaper places they are no where except a mention here or there. We do have a few places shortlisted but this time we may just land there without all stays booked.

4. Couch-surfing really works.

I had always thought it was a myth but this time we have a couch (actually a bed) to crash on for our first two days in the country. This has really given us peace of mind.

5. Always Blog

While looking for information I landed upon this blog and it was like a mine of information filled with cheap stays local food and local transport. It is actually like playing it forward. No guidebook tells you the realities the way a real experience does. Forget about all the finer things about blogging and remember it is about playing it forward.

Do you have some things that your trip research has taught you.
